Schulich School of Business

PLANT provided the landscape design for Baird Sampson Architects’ new Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study & Research Building at York University’s Schulich School of Business. The project creates a series of courtyards including a new common area between the existing and new Schulich buildings, and a landscape buffer of sugar maple trees and understorey plants that extends the east end of the quad southward.

The design of the project creates green space, improves sustainability, provides users with shelter from the elements, and facilitates long-term maintenance whilst ensuring students and faculty are met with a welcoming sequence of views as they approach the new building from the South Tower. The project also addresses pedestrian circulation, increases accessibility, and strengthens cross- circulation and connections between buildings.

Trees were selected for their colour, form, and drought resistance, as well as for their vibrancy in the spring and fall – particularly during convocation months.
