Ribbon of the Lower Don

This project was commissioned to create a donor recognition/public realm/trail improvement and signage system for the Don Valley. Drawing on the established Ribbon theme for the donor campaign, the solution emphasizes the concept of bringing people back to the water and to the Don River as an amenity.

Highlighting moments that celebrate place, key views and public engagement, the REVEAL ENGAGE EMBRACE DIRECT concept infuses a ribbon of colour while drawing on the industrial aesthetic of the existing infrastructure. This ever-changing but repeated folded element adds a sinuous flow that carries the visitor along the trail and marks it as a significant destination of its own, while providing a key balance between special moments for the individual and a celebration of the valley as a whole.

Donor recognition is engraved or laser cut into any of the coloured steel elements along with Don Valley and Don River themed poetry, graphics and other interpretive information such as floor markers and significant historical facts.
