Situated on Lake Ontario an hour’s drive east of Toronto, Lakeport Beach will be a 190-acre low- to medium-density residential development with a New Urbanist emphasis on walkable, village-scale community living. A drainage ditch originating in farmland to the north extends through the site to the shore. The developer turned to PLANT to reconceive this infrastructural necessity as a central spine of inviting public realm space that would meet all ecological preservation requirements of Lower Trent Conservation, the Conservation Authority with jurisdiction for the site.

Previously, a wide, relatively flat greenway median with a narrow drainage channel slicing down its centre was envisioned, with a mix of east/west vehicular-access streets and pedestrian laneways running perpendicular to this central spine. The branching laneways would serve as trails connecting to wetlands on both sides of the residential development.

PLANT’s enhanced development of the initial concept reconceives the entire greenway spine as a naturalized floodplain with footbridges traversing the sinuous watercourse that meanders across much of its width. Alternating declivities and highlands slow the flow and promote resiliency by providing places for water to pond in wet seasons and revert to meadowland at drier times of the year. By natural means, this landscape removes toxins from the water before it flows into the lake. Similarly, along the east/west green laneways, a sequence of rain gardens and bio-swales manages storm-water runoff and purifies water as it is routed toward the central greenway floodplain.

Some parts of the greenway will experience more fluctuation in saturation than others. PLANT has developed plantings for six different habitat types, ranging from Ephemeral Pool and Floodplain Forest to Dry Meadow and Dry Thicket.
In addition to providing pleasant routes for humans to walk or cycle to the lakeshore or the woodland areas flanking Lakeport Beach, PLANT’s plan rethinks all green park connections as ecological corridors. It calls for a ‘mosaic’ of green roofs and small ground-level green spaces to support the journeys of birds and pollinators travelling through the residential development toward the high-quality wetland habitat patches on either side of it, or south to the lake. Culvert improvements introduce a safe wildlife crossing from the north.
