Goldring Landscape, University of Toronto

Situated across Devonshire Place from the University of Toronto’s Varsity Centre, the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport is a 185,000-sf sport and exercise facility housing a 2,000-seat field house for basketball, volleyball and other court sports, a strength and conditioning centre, fitness studio, sports medicine clinic, and research and teaching facilities designed by MJMA/Patkau Architects.

Working with the emerging refurbished streetscape for the recently redeveloped Varsity Centre, we designed a Goldring streetscape that provides new shade trees and plaza paving overlooking the playing fields, to support the sport ‘spectacle’ aspect of the building. The landscape work includes the Devonshire Place streetscape, intimate sitting areas at the rear connecting to the University’s landscaped pedestrian network, spectacular views into the arena and through the building, and an 11,640-sf green roof.
