Gaze, Glimpse, Glance

Gaze Glimpse Glance relates visual experience to our physical experience of time in Woodbine Subway Station. In three segments and speeds, the artwork follows the journey of the traveller, and reflects the inherent tempo of each place – standing and waiting on the bus platform, the paced mechanics of walking down the stairs, and the corridor dash to the subway platform. Recurring in each time-space is a circular form, transformed by line, reflectivity, and vibrant colour – each distinct to the location’s tempo.
GAZE at the Bus Bay – red (stop) vertical lines are in dialogue with the static columns, brick walls, and the waiting people; GLIMPSE at the Stair/Bulkhead – amber (walk cautiously) concentric lines are directional, on a bold yellow billboard; and GLANCE at the Concourse – green (go) multiple circles extend and overlap, weaving between ceiling lights. Each circle’s reflectivity responds to the tempo: GAZE is the most reflective, GLIMPSE focuses forward with diminishing reflectivity in the recessed cone, and GLANCE is a blur, rushing with you as you dash to your destination.
