Danforth Parkettes

This project is the first implementation of PLANT’s street- scape master plan for the Danforth Mosaic (The Danny) BIA. (Danforth Mosaic Master Plan) Completed in 2018, the master plan proposed a series of ‘Parkette Living Rooms’ on flanking streets along the Dan- forth, both to celebrate the homey and liveable feel of the neighbourhood and to help people find their way south from the subway line to the Danforth.

The Parkette is conceived as a cluster of little living rooms on the east and west boulevards, united by a vividly coloured artwork in the roadway. Combining five elements of the domestic living room  – a carpet to set the stage, comfortable seating, an artwork, a backdrop of plants, and lighting to frame the space – the parkette will provide pub- lic social spaces and an amenity for the BIA to program street festivals, concerts, farmer’s markets, and holiday celebrations. Sustainable hardwood benches are paired with pebble-shaped tables/​seats on a carpet of precast pavers. Above, off-grid solar lighting is evocative of a resi- dential lamp and offers a visual cue to the Danforth from Strathmore Boulevard and the subway to the north.
