The Queen Street frontage of Nathan Phillips Square helps fulfill key aims of the project - to create a green perimeter in contrast to the open square, to activate this threshold with activity, and to make the square more permeable – better connected to the streetscape. This involved the replacement of an above-grade grille with an in-ground grille, extensive plantings, and the installation of new seating areas that would provide places to pause or gather for conversation. Some of the seating is parkette-style and integrated with planting; a row of bollards with angled tops along Queen Street also provide places for pedestrians to stop and rest, and savour the views of Toronto’s signature civic space. The existing parking entrance was also reconciled in a new building to provide better accessibility between levels.
