midtown yonge streetscape

The Midtown Yonge BIA (Business Improvement Area) is a new BIA comprising nine blocks centred on the main artery of Yonge Street in midtown Toronto. The district’s west border, located a block west of Yonge, is the open trench of a north/south subway line – only one street traverses the BIA east/west. In advance of anticipated large-scale development in what is still predominantly an older, low-rise, fine-grained retail district, the BIA and the City of Toronto commissioned a master plan to guide development of the streetscape and commercial realm.

This stretch of Yonge uniquely and consistently supports retail on the side street flankages. The master plan emphasizes the suitability of these flankages to become nodes for public realm improvements – especially given that opportunities to widen and unify the Yonge Street sidewalks are limited. The master plan includes an art program and outlines work and priorities for the next five years and beyond, taking into account yearly budgets and anticipating future capital projects with the City.
